HTA Delivers
SURVIVE
(LAS CRUCES,
NM—July 1, 2004) Horton Technical
Associates, Inc. (HTA) announces delivery
of the SURVIVE item-level performance model
to the U.S. Army.
“SURVIVE
is a Java-based software application designed
to support development of the next generation
of ground combat vehicles,” said William
D. Horton, President of HTA. “Today’s combat
environment is extremely lethal, and there
appear to be numerous opportunities to use
advanced technologies to protect soldiers
from multiple types of threats.”
Horton continued,
“To understand the capabilities and limitations
of these technologies, you have to understand
how they will interact with other systems.
With SURVIVE, analysts can examine key engagement
processes. We believe the model will provide
new insights about the impact that advanced
technologies can have on ground combat operations.”
HTA’s success
with SURVIVE is due to the company’s unique
approach to software design and engineering.
“Most software development efforts run into
cost and schedule problems because the developer
has difficulty accommodating requirements
or adapting to change”, Horton continued.
“With SURVIVE, we used a process called
‘XTreme Software Development’. This process
allows us to concurrently design, code,
test, and document the application. It’s
very responsive to customer needs, and it
allows us to accommodate mid-course changes
that would have adversely affected other
software development efforts.”
“SURVIVE
contains almost 200,000 lines of code,”
concluded Horton, “But our team delivered
the complete application, along with documentation,
in only nine months. Given the model’s size
and complexity, I think we proved that XTreme
Software Development works. In fact, I think
we might have set a record for software
development.”
Horton Technical Associates, Incorporated
(HTA) is a private company owned by a service-disabled
veteran and provides technical and software
development and engineering support services
to U.S. Department of Defense agencies involved
with the design of advanced weapons systems
and technologies. Since its inception in
1999, HTA has provided Operations Research,

and Software Engineering and Development
support for the U.S. Army.
